What Should You Do When You Receive a Subpoena?

A subpoena is a notice that you are required to appear for a court proceeding, such as to answer questions at a deposition, or to supply certain documents.

You may not ignore a subpoena. If you fail to appear at the time and place specified you could be held in contempt of court, which could result in a fine or a jail sentence.

If you are subpoenaed, there are certain steps you should take immediately:

Read the entire subpoena before contacting the State Attorney’s Office.
Once you have read the entire subpoena, call the State Attorney’s Office if you have any questions. This phone number is listed on the subpoena.
If a date and time for appearance is specified, call to confirm the information before appearing. Always leave contact information in case something changes and you are not needed.
