Victim Witness Services

Not knowing what comes next can be more frightening to victims of crime than the initial victimization.

The Victim Witness Services unit empowers victims to know what is happening and what to expect. The unit keeps victims apprised of the proceedings in their case and answers their questions. It makes the justice system less intimidating by educating victims and giving them a voice.

Victim Witness Services contacts every victim. Staffers go over plea offers with victims prior to the arraignment, or get information for them regarding a stituation if they are seeking it. Although not counselors, the unit makes counseling referrals.

Victim Witness Services also lets victims know what is needed from them for a successful prosecution.

Defendants have the right to their day in court. The Office of the State Attorney ensures victims’ rights also are protected.
