A grand jury is a type of jury that determines
whether there is probable cause to charge someone with a crime. Grand
juries carry out this duty by examining evidence and issuing
indictments, or by investigating alleged crimes and issuing
presentments. A grand jury is traditionally larger than juries used
during a trial.
At the State Attorney's Office, the Grand Jury unit
is responsible for the investigation of all homicides, suspicious deaths
and various other crimes. A prosecutor and an investigator are
available 24-hours a day to respond to homicide crime scenes and to
assist law enforcement officers with legal issues in the investigation
of homicides and other suspicious deaths.
The unit prosecutor is the legal advisor to the
Grand Jury to whom he/she presents all first degree murder cases and
necessary investigations.
